Summary
On June 12, 2024, the B.C. government finalized regulations and announced changes that extend workers’ compensation coverage from WorkSafeBC to app-based ride-hail and delivery services workers. Workers are eligible for workers’ compensation benefits, including wage loss and vocational rehabilitation, for work-related injuries.
The legislation came into effect on September 3, 2024.
Individuals working for online delivery and ride-hail operators are considered workers by the legislation. Workers have three primary rights:
- The right to refuse unsafe work without penalty
- The right to know about workplace hazards, their impacts, and how they are controlled
- The right to participate in occupational health and safety: by asking questions, belonging to health and safety committees and taking part in investigations or inspections
