This engagement is closed. See "Results" for the decision on the proposed exposure limits.

Overview

  • What: Changing exposure limits for chemical substances
  • Who: Employers, workers, and safety professionals working with chemical substances
  • Why: Ensure exposure limits are aligned with best practices and available science
  • Key topics: Threshold limit values, chemicals, industrial hygiene

Summary

Exposure limits are upper limits on the acceptable concentration of a chemical substance or class of substances in workplace air. WorkSafeBC has a committee dedicated to ensuring exposure limits in B.C.’s workplaces adhere to best practices and are updated in alignment with advances in the underlying science.

A key source of this information is the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). WorkSafeBC’s committee has reviewed recent changes published by ACGIH and has proposed changes to the exposure limits for 22 substances found in B.C. workplaces.

Results

With the exception of benzene, the proposed exposure limits were sent to the Board of Directors for decision and have been adopted.

The benzene EL continues to be under study, and a call for consultation will be posted prior to Board submission.
