Summary
Sections 12.74 to 12.80.2 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (Regulation) explain the requirements for using automotive lifts (autolifts) at work. These lifts are common in places like car dealerships, repair shops, tow truck businesses, and gas stations in British Columbia.
If an autolift fails, it can cause serious injuries or even death. In B.C., one of the only times workers are allowed to be under a raised vehicle is when it’s on an autolift. Because this is so dangerous, the requirements make sure the lifts are safe and well maintained.
Section 12.74 currently says that autolifts must be third-party certified before they are installed and used. If a business already has a lift that wasn’t approved before installation, they must either replace it or ask WorkSafeBC for a variance to keep using it.
The goal of the proposed amendments is to make autolifts safer for workers. The amendments will update the current safety standards and give more options for lifts that don’t meet the listed standards, if they follow additional conditions. Other parts of the autolift standards are also being updated to make them clearer and more consistent.
